My husband and I had the pleasure of working with John to design a complete remodel of our multi-level backyard which included various outdoor living spaces such as a pool and spa, covered cabana/BBQ area, and pool house. From the start of the project, throughout the construction process and the many modifications we made, John went above and beyond to guide our vision to completion. His communication was on point. He worked with the contractors to ensure construction was going to plan and made modifications and adjustments - sometimes on the fly - very efficiently and expertly. All of this came in addition to his unmatched design eye and attention to detail. We now have the California resort style oasis of our dreams and look forward to working with him on future projects. We could not be happier with the services we received and highly recommend John at WAL Designs.

Such a pleasure working with WAL Designs! John helped our dream home become a reality. He designed our 850sf two-story addition to our existing home in Carlsbad and it was an incredible transformation that ultimately resulted in a cohesive, stunning aesthetic. John is great to work with from the creative planning side to the technical plans, details and code requirements. He is very knowledgeable of the city permitting process and is very thorough. John is also fair and works at an above average pace. We were permitted after one round of comments, so only a few months overall for design and permitting. Not only did I use WAL Designs for my personal home project, but I’ve been able to work with John as the architect on commercial construction projects in Carlsbad Village, so he is very capable. Highly recommend!

I've collaborated with John at WAL Designs on several residential projects and have also leaned on him as a go-to resource for building/code guidelines. He really knows his stuff and has a great eye for modern design. Super easy to work with, professional, and always responsive. I definitely plan to keep recommending him to my real estate clients. He's a solid asset to have on your team!

John is a very gifted, professional architect. His designs are detailed, an original. He took on a very difficult project, instilled complete confidence in his ability to make things happen. They did! He gave us a set price for the job, when it took a left turn, he stood by his original fee, and wouldn’t accept compensation for the extra time needed to complete the project. I wouldn’t hire anyone else. He’s our guy!

John has several great attributes which made our experience with him outstanding: First, he has a great design aesthetic which allowed him to bring thoughtful design to the whole concept of our house but also all to all the smaller details that reveal themselves over time. Second, he is a great listener, where he worked hard to match his skills and expertise to our needs, desires, and dreams. Third, his attention to detail allowed him to create plans that were much more thorough than most architects execute...this saved time when discussing the project with potential contractors and saved time once the job was awarded because the contractor did not need to fill in too many gaps. Fourth, he is a solid communicator and collaborator- when we had questions, he had a quick response, when we needed to brainstorm on an idea or problem, he came with constructive ideas. And finally, he is just a great person to work with.
